Mahaicony woman admits travel document forgery

A 22-year-old Mahaicony woman was yesterday fined $170,000 with an alternative of three years’ imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to forgery charges in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Between March 8 and 23, Maharani Ramnarine of 24 Good Faith, Mahaicony conspired with persons to forge an Inter-Caribbean document, number 144766. She was also charged with uttering the said document at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on March 27.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Mathews said that Ramnarine presented the document to the immigration officer at CJIA and left for St Vincent and the Grenadines. She was arrested by the immigration authorities of that country and returned to Guyana. Based on investigations carried out she was arrested and charged.

Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson representing Ramnarine said that she had given her power of attorney to an individual to look after her travel documents and was not aware that it was forged. He asked the magistrate to be lenient with the young woman since her innocence had  put her  into trouble.

Ramnarine was fined $85,000 with an alternative of three years imprisonment on each charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.
