Local government urged to conserve

The Ministry of Local Government is calling on the various statutory bodies in the sector “to note the steep increase in the cost of fuel” and utilities and to take all necessary steps to conserve on their use.

Regional and neighbourhood democratic councils and municipalities are urged to put cost saving measures in place to avoid unbudgeted expenditures due to these increases. The measures should cover all public buildings under their control: administrative and personnel, school dorms, health facilities and guest houses.

The ministry said it will monitor the situation very closely to ensure that the statutory bodies comply fully with the established guidelines and procedures set out. Regional executive officers, town clerks and overseers will be held accountable for any wastage and careless use of fuel and utility services, the ministry said.
