Asanti Mickle impressive at inter-club swim meet

Though young stars Niall Roberts, Noelle Smith, Linden Wickham, and Ronaldo Rodrigues dominated their respective events the more experienced campaigners who graced the Dolphin Interclub swim meet which ended on Sunday at the Colgrain pool stole the honours on the day.

The competition included some former national swimmers who had not swum competitively for quite some time as well as some of the faces that would usually be seen on deck such as table officials, coaches and parents.

The lists of the past swimmers included Dolphin’s Launa Dickson, Jason King, Denica Summerson, and Ewin Trotman Dorado’s Sebastien de Freitas, Nayira Freso, Christina King, Mario King, Asanti Mickle, Han Gaskin, Mary Chung, Shyka Gonsalves and Joanne Lowe along with secretary of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Karen Pilgrim and GASA head coach Stephanie Fraser.

Mickle, who currently holds seven national records, showed that she was still flawless at her craft in wining all the events she competed in by considerably huge margins.

Mickle told Stabroek Sport that although she had pretty much called it quits in the sport, she decided to participate after being encouraged by her coach.

She ended the meet with sensational wins in the 100-yard freestyle and 200- yard breaststroke events.

GASA’s current top swimmer Roberts, who will be participating in the 50m freestyle event at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games in next month, put on quite an impressive show during the meet.

Roberts comfortably won the 100, 200 and 400-yard freestyle and the 200- yard butterfly events.

However, Roberts’s success seemed miniscule when compared to Wickham’s, who made and emphatic statement by capturing nine wins throughout the meet.

The 2008 Junior Carifta swimmer secured victories in 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke, the 100 and 200-yard butterfly and the 200- year individual medley events. Smith outshone the girls’ 13-14 category, winning the 100, 200, 400, 800 freestyle events as well as the 200-yard butterfly and the 200 yard international medley events.
