Unity shooter in custody

The Unity businessman who discharged several rounds at his neighbour’s house while threatening to kill the occupants, yesterday morning turned himself in at the Mahaica Police Station and up to press time last evening was still in custody.

The man, who owns a small ice factory returned to his home around midday yesterday in the company of several ranks to collect the weapon which he used wildly on Tuesday night because he believed that his neighbours were gossiping with his wife about him. The man is a licensed firearm holder.

Stabroek News returned to Factory Road, Unity, Mahaica yesterday where the incident occurred and was told that the man would usually use expletives when he is intoxicated and would discharge rounds in his yard.

However on Tuesday night around 6 pm, he walked into his neighbour’s yard and while cursing, discharged about seven rounds at the house. The occupants of the house managed to secure themselves in their property until the man who was under the influence had left. No one was hurt and there was no damage to the building. A report could not be made at the station that night because of transportation difficulties but this was done the following morning. The occupants of the house handed over two spent shells which they retrieved from the front of the yard, to the police.

Raywattie Sukprasad, who was the businessman’s main target on Tuesday night, expressed satisfaction that the man was in police custody when she spoke with Stabroek News yesterday. She had told this newspaper that she feared for her life and those of her family because the man had threatened to kill them if they left the house.

Speaking from her Factory Road home, she said that the man told the police that he was shooting at alligators and not at her house or the occupants.

She said that she visited the station again yesterday and spoke with the ranks.

“I am happy that he is behind bars but I hope that they will charge he”, she told this newspaper.

Following the incident the residents had been tightlipped saying that they didn’t hear any gunshots and knew nothing about the incident.

This newspaper was told by a resident that after the police had left the area on Wednesday, persons living close by were openly speaking about the incident.

Police made several visits to the man’s home on Wednesday to arrest him but he could not be found.
