Better Hope nightspot incident

A police constable who was found with a firearm and matching ammunition that he could not account for at a night spot earlier this month, yesterday made an appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where he was released on $100, 000 bail.

According to a police press release constable Tamesh Rawana appeared before Magistrate Yohhannseh Cave on charges of possession of a firearm without licence and possession of ammunition without licence.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was placed on $50,000 bail on each charge to return to court on August 21, the release added.

On July 5 around 6:15 pm, Rawana was allegedly found with a .38 revolver and six matching rounds.

Police were called to the area by public-spirited citizens and following the find, the constable could not give an account for the loaded weapon.

He was subsequently placed under close arrest.
