Pan-playing prisoner still on the lam

The convicted prisoner who managed to escape while he and other inmates were playing steel pan at the airport remained at large up to press time last evening despite searches by prison authorities.

Shawn Yhap, a 32-year-old inmate of the Camp Street prison was among seven who were taken to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri on Saturday to play pan. However Yhap who was a “trustee” was discovered missing between 8:15 and 8:30 pm, when prisoner officers were preparing to take the group back to the prison.

It is unclear when or how the prisoner managed to escape unseen.

Prison officials have since launched an investigation into this latest escape which comes on the heels of another, which occurred last Wednesday.

On that occasion, 20-year-old murder accused Trevor Major was the responsibility of the police, who were transporting him and several others to the Camp Street prison after they made appearances at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

Major managed to pick the handcuffs he was wearing and successful exited a “locked and moving” prison van.

The two police officers who were transporting the remand prisoners have since been placed under close arrest as investigations into that escape continue.

Since last Wednesday, there has been no further sighting of Major and despite searches at the homes of his relatives and friends no information has been gathered.
