This tilapia hatchery at Mon Repos should boost agriculture

Dear Editor,
I would like to share my thoughts on the recent dedication and commissioning of the tilapia hatchery in memory of the late Minister Satyadeow Sawh on August 07, 2008.

I attended the event at the Mon Repos Backdam out of sheer curiosity and was amazed of the presence of a state-of-the-art facility that I have been hearing about so often. Even though the location was way in the Backdam the event was well attended and coordinated. With this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to commend the organizers of the Ministry of Agriculture for a job well done.

Particularly pleasing was the attendance of a wide cross section of farmers, diplomats, political leaders and other senior government functionaries.   According to a technical officer that spoke, the new facility will significantly increase the production of fingerlings to support the expansion of aquaculture. In addition the audience was told that on site training will be done to support interested farmers and potential investors. This is commendable since it also provides support to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Grow More Food campaign.

It was also pleasing to see a project successfully executed with the collaboration of the government, overseas missions, the private sector and other stakeholders. Much more of this type of cooperation is need in our country today which will surely identify Guyana as the bread basket of the Caribbean.

Once again, I would like to congratulate the government for dedicating the facility in memory of the late Satyadeow Sawh for his dedication and contribution to the agricultural sector. Meanwhile, I will be monitoring the output of this facility to ensure the promises made by officials are delivered.
Yours faithfully,
Sham Ramsundar
