Barbados’s Combermere Secondary School (CSS) started their tour of Guyana on a winning note when their under-15 team defeated a Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) under-15 side by 99 runs at GNIC, Woolford Avenue yesterday.
Being asked to take first strike, CSS were bowled out for 166 from 33 of their 35 overs with Justin Greaves who made 40 (5×6; 1×4), Keon Richard 28 (3×6;1×4) and Derrol Harewood with 20 (2×6 being the principal scorers.
Deo Narine (3-20), Vishal Singh (3-28) and Travis Dalton with 3-33 did the damage with the ball for GNIC who found the bowling of Daniel Jordan (6-18), Greaves (2-6) and Harewood (2-15) too hot to handle and were routed for 67.
Today, CSS’s under-19 team that includes Barbados’ prolific TCL under-19 batsman Kraigg Braithwaite will take on Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in a 40-over encounter at DCC’s home ground in Queenstown.
Braithwaite will get support from fellow Barbados under-19 batsman Royston Chase along with Dario Vaughan, Jomel Warrican and Shane Dowridge.
DCC will be led by national under-19 opener Trevon Griffith and will include national under-19 middle order batsman Royston Alkins, Demerara under-19 captain and wicket keeper Denver Greaves, Teralph Scipio, Troy Nurse, Seon Cameron and Matthew Marques.
The last time Braithwaite faced a Guyanese bowling attack was in the just-concluded West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/TCL sponsored 2008 under-19 three-day Challenge Trophy tournament at the Cable and Wireless/BET ground, where the 16-year-old registered his 32nd century of his young career (112) in Barbados’ total of 300-8 declared.
When Guyana who were the defending champions began their reply, they were shakily placed on 36-2 before rain, which had interrupted the match on more than one occasion, had the final say washing out the final day’s play resulting in both teams playing to a no-decision.
Barbados went on to win the competition, while Guyana had to settle for the runners-up position despite starting their title defence with two wins, compared to the home team’s one win and a draw.
