Camptown, Aplha square of for $1M first prize

The die has been cast and  the stage set for the final of the Alpha United Carifesta football extravaganza at the Guyana National Stadium Providence, from 6pm today when the question of who will win the $1M,  Sunburst Camptown or tournament host Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will be answered.

With a star-studded lineup to call on, Alpha would be starting this one as favourites but Camptown in their own right, are no pushovers as they have proven that on numerous occasions already.

In their semi-final clash with Pele Football Club, Camptown won on penalty kicks thanks to the `Superman’ like efforts of  custodian Richie Richards who pulled off two brilliant saves from Dirk Archer and Keoma Gravesande.

On the other hand, Alpha’s Ronson Williams had displayed similar efforts which enabled his team to defeat Fruta Conquerors in the final of the Mayor’s Cup earlier this year, so both custodians are known for coming up trumps on the day.

It is now left to the remaining players to ensure that neither of the two goalkeepers are called upon to perform such feats again.

President of Sunburst Camptown Troy Mendonca told Stabroek Sports that the game can go to any team, but the team that commits the least amount of mistakes will win the competition.

“My position is that the team that makes the least amount of mistakes will win this encounter.

However, I must say that I am happy that we have made it this far as persons were of the opinion that we were not being tested enough during the matches we have played so far this year and this game will also be used to test the ability of the players.”
