Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud presented a number of items to support agricultural activities during an outreach exercise earlier this month at Paramakatoi and other Region Eight communities.
A press release said the minister handed out a quantity of seeds, acoushi ant bait, a swing fog machine and other items during a meeting with villagers. During his two-day visit to the area Persaud urged villagers to support the ‘Grow more’ food initiative in order to ensure that enough food is available in the hinterland. He also assured villagers that he is cognizant of the difficulties they are facing and that steps are being taken to improve their livelihoods. Persaud said the ministry is sourcing improved varieties of planting materials through bilateral cooperation with Brazil. He said too training will be made available to farmers interested in utilizing drip irrigation technology, which is especially useful during the long dry season.
Additionally, Persaud said farmers will soon benefit from the services of an agricultural officer stationed in the region to provide technical advice and other training. In response to a request for tools the minister said he would collaborate with the Amerindian Affairs ministry to provide the necessary support and improved technology to create a renewed interest in agriculture. He said too he would forward other requests to the relevant agencies.
At Mahdia, Persaud urged villagers to engage in agricultural activities in addition to mining. The minister gave assurances that the necessary training and support would be provided for interested persons. At the meeting some businessmen expressed an interest in aquaculture and the livestock sector. According to the release a team of technical officers from the ministry in collaboration with the Region Eight Administration will make arrangements to meet with the said persons.
The release said too NARI Director Dr Oudho Homenauth, Indian Spice Expert Dr Shashi Kumar, Technical Manager attached to the ministry John Woolford, Chairman of the National Climate Change Committee Shyam Nokta and Chief Hydromet Officer at the Hydrometeorological Service Bhaleka Seulall also participated in the outreach exercise.
