A 33-year-old man who stole a mattress from the Georgetown Public Hospital compound was sentenced to nine months imprisonment when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Leon Persaud of Cummings Lodge Squatting Area pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny.
On September 3, Persaud went to the Georgetown Public Hospital compound and stole a mattress valued $10,000. A security guard who was on duty saw Persaud and apprehended him with the mattress in his hand and later handed him over to the police.
However, Persaud told the court, “Meh Worship I deh passing by de hospital and I see de mattress near the bin and I jus jump over the fence and tek it out.” He stated that “them beat me and bust up me ‘hole hand and tek it back.”
Persaud pleaded with the magistrate to give him a light sentence. After getting nine months and as he was being escorted out of the court he was heard lamenting, “It been near the nasty food and trash in de bin meh Worship.”
