An unidentified man who was reportedly under the influence died last night minutes after he was struck down at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

The man had been drinking earlier at a shop in the area, according to residents, and was chasing a young woman when the accident occurred. Reports are that she had fleeced him of some money and he was in hot pursuit.

An eyewitness recounted that the man barely appeared to be steady on his feet as he chased the girl across the highway at Better Hope. They had cleared the northern carriageway and were dashing over the southern carriageway when he reportedly ran into the path of a car that was heading to the city.
“We stand up on de road watching them two and laughing because he drunk and she running and laughing but next thing we know a car pick he up and carry he a distance before he get throw off”, an eyewitness said last night.

Residents who assembled in the street were recounting how the man had been drinking for hours at a corner shop in Better Hope. He was not known to those who saw him. According to them, the young woman had been chatting him up a short while before he ran out of the shop chasing her.
A resident said the man was staggering across the road running after the girl and did not see the car approaching. The car had been going at a considerable speed, the man said, and that the impact was, “very loud”.

The man was later pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Police were on the scene last night carrying out investigations.
