Girl remanded over hot oil attack

The eighteen-year-old-girl who allegedly attempted to murder another by throwing hot oil on her last Wednesday was remanded to prison yesterday when she appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Niketa Jordan of 48 Barr Street, Kitty who is accused of attempting to murder Haniyfa Cordis was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

It is alleged that on October 8, at the  Kitty home of the two women, Jordan threw hot oil on Cordis’ face while she was asleep and immediately fled the scene but was later apprehended by police at a building in Kaneville.

However, Jordan stated that she had gotten into an argument with Cordis the night before and the following morning while she was in her room, she was approached by Cordis who attempted to stab her with a knife.

She said that at that time she was frying hamburgers on the stove in hot oil and she picked up the pan and threw its contents on Cordis to defend herself.

Her attorney, Mohamed Zafar, then made an appearance and reiterated her story and applied for bail.

However the prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that Cordis is still in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital and  Jordan had fled the scene immediately after the incident.

The prosecution further stated that the offence is one of a serious nature and if Jordan is granted bail she may commit similar offences.

Magistrate Robertson then ordered that Jordan be remanded to prison and return to court on October 27.
