Theft accused can ‘hardly lift a loaf of bread’ – counsel

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Monday granted $100,000 bail to a father of ten accused of stealing a quantity of electrical appliances from a store.
Fifty-year-old Evan Edwards pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that between July 30 and September 28, Edwards stole from a store two air boxes, a quantity of wires and electrical appliances valued $800,000. Edwards was reportedly chased by employees of the store and the two air boxes and the wires were recovered. Police later apprehended and charged him.

In his application for bail, Edwards’s attorney Basil Williams said his client did not commit the crime. “Look at meh client, he look like he could lift an air box, much less two?” Williams queried in his submission. He further said that Edwards had been encountering some problems with the owner of the business and had been targeted. “Your worship, my client can hardly lift a loaf of bread,” he contended.

However an employee at the store told the court “almost every night we been chasing this man cause he always at de store vehicle thiefing de parts.” Further, the employee said that Edwards had stolen the appliances from the store and had attempted to flee the scene when he was seen by the other employees who pursued him and recovered some of the items.

Sometime later Edwards was again reportedly seen packing a bag with more appliances and was again chased by the employees. “Your worship dah man strong, he drop de bag that he dey running with and I had to get help from another staff to lift back de bag and it dey still heavy foh we,” the employee said.

Edwards was ordered to appear in court again on November 13.
