UG to reopen early next month

Classes at the University of Guyana are expected to resume by the early part of November, says Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh.

According to a press release from GINA, Baksh yesterday received the final report of the post-air sampling and asbestos testing which was conducted at the University of Guyana.

The Minister explained that the test was done according to the Ontario Regulations and stated that out of the four hundred and forty-seven samples that were tested only one was found to be above the limit of 0.05 fibre per cubic centimetre. The room, from which the failed sample was taken, has been cleaned and retested and the subsequent sample was found to be below the 0.05 per cubic centimetre limit.

Baksh said that the University’s administration had assured him that a plan is in place to facilitate the smooth return to the University campus. The University has also assured the Minister that all the courses for academic year 2008/2009 have been rescheduled and will be completed within the academic year.
