2008 Le Meridien Open Tennis C/ships…

Following their triumph in the men’s 45 and over doubles category, the pair of Dr. Steve Surujbally and Maxie Fox added the 55-years-and-over category title to their belts as competition in the 2008 Le Meridien Hotel Open Tennis Championships continued on Saturday.

Playing at the Le Meridien Hotel tennis courts, Surujbally and Fox recorded a straight set, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the pair of Omar and David Persaud in the final.

Also in winners’ row Saturday night were Ezra Sue Ho and Shauna Gentle who defeated Carol Humphrey and Godfrey Lowden in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, to win the mixed doubles category.

Meanwhile, Anthony Downes advanced to last night’s quarter-finals in the men’s Open singles when he defeated Owen Lewis 6-1, 6-2 while Jeremy Miller had to come from a set down to defeat Imo Fox in their match.

After losing the first set 3-6, Miller rebounded to take the other two sets 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals.
In the boys’ 14 and under singles category, there were wins for Samuel Glasgow and Gavin Lewis who did not permit their opponents in Adrian Kanto and Khalif Gobin to record a point, as they scored comfortable 9-0 victories respectively.

It was not the same for Dion Blackmoore and Seanden Longe who, despite recording victories over Benedict Sukra and Joshua Lalbachan respectively, did so with the scorecard reading 9-1.

Afruica Gentle also had a 9-1 victory over Lucinda Munilall whilst Shauna Gentle recorded a 9-3 victory over Krystal Sukhra in respective matches of the girls’ 14 and under age group.

Dominic Fraser and Allan Correia recorded straight sets victories in the boys’ 12 and under category over Keith Wintz and Joshua Lalbachan respectively with Fraser winning 6-2, 6-0 and  Correia  6-2, 6-4.

In the boys’ 18 and under division, Jonathan Antczak defeated Nicholas Glasgow in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 whilst Blackmoore recorded his second victory of the night, even though he had to come form a set down to defeat Glasgow 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Action in the championship continues tonight at the same venue, with four matches.

Stephen Longe and Victor Da Silva will  battle for a place in the men’s 45 and over final while Harry Panday and Albert Madramootoo will battle for a semi final place in the same division.

The ladies will take to the court afterwards with Shelly Ramdyhan and Aruna Ramrathan  battling in the ladies Open singles competition whilst Don Singh and Rudy Grant will culminate the night’s proceedings with their semi-final match  in the men’s 35 and over singles category. (Calvin Roberts)
