‘Mistaken identity’ claimed in security cameras theft case

A twenty-nine-year-old man who allegedly stole several portable DVD players, security cameras and other items from a firm was granted $80,000 bail on Wednesday when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Vishal Boodhoo of Guysuco Park, Diamond, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to the charges of break and enter and larceny since he was charged along with another man for the offences.

It is alleged that on October 18, Boodhoo broke and entered the firm of Fitzgerald Cooper and stole four portable DVD players, a security camera with a monitor and two others without monitors, three shirts and a quantity of clothing and other items, all valued over $1M.

However, Boodhoo’s lawyer stated that his client was both shocked and amazed at the charges of break and enter and larceny as  Boodhoo had appeared in court for another matter. The lawyer also stated that Boodhoo did not know anything about the case or the other person who had also been charged  with the offences.

The lawyer posited that it was a case of “mistaken identity”. The defence attorney then applied for bail stating that Boodhoo was no flight risk and  “he doesn’t even have a passport.”

The prosecution objected to the bail application on the grounds that Boodhoo was the right person and  on the day when he and the other person were arrested they had gotten into a confrontation where the other man admitted that he and Boodhoo had removed the items mentioned.

However the magistrate granted Boodhoo bail in the sum of $80,000 and ordered that he return to court on December 10.
