Permit me to add my voice in offering condolences to the family of the late David de Caires.
Mr. de Caires, through his pioneering efforts in establishing an independent newspaper in Guyana at a very difficult time in the history of the country, has contributed significantly to what happened in 1992 and thereafter. He believed in openness, transparency and good governance as was evident by the numerous editorials and other articles that the Stabroek News carried over the years under his astute leadership.
Mr. de Caires was always supportive of the work of the Audit Office, and it was mainly through the Stabroek News, that the Audit Office became a high profile institution. Previously, few people knew about the Audit Office and what it meant to be publicly accountable for the use of resources that truly belong to the people of Guyana.
All Guyana owes a great debt of gratitude to Mr. de Caires.
