Two men who tried to escape from the police were arrested after they hit a 60-year-old cyclist on Tuesday.
In a statement, police said the two men were taken into custody after the accident, which occurred shortly after 3.30 pm. Police said members of a mobile police patrol on the embankment at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, observed four men on two motorcycles acting in a suspicious manner. When they made efforts to stop the men, however, one pair turned back and escaped while the other, in trying to escape, struck down pedal cyclist Oswald Belle, of Vigilance South, East Coast Demerara.
As a result, one of the motorcyclists sustained injuries to his right wrist and was taken to the Georgetown Hospital for treatment. Both men are now in police custody assisting with the investigations, the release said.
A senior police official told Stabroek News that the injured man is wanted for a series of robberies and will be taken for an identification parade shortly.
Stabroek News was initially told that the man was being transported to the Sparendaam Police Station, when he attempted to escape with a male accomplice on a motorcycle. The police were reported to have given chase and apprehended the two men after they collided with Belle at Beterverwagting.
According to reports, the motorcycle is an unlicensed one and neither of the two men was licensed to ride a motorcycle.
