Detainee claims police brutality, admitted to hospital

Ryan Crouchman, a detainee in custody at the Brickdam lock-ups, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital last night after he was allegedly beaten during an interrogation session.

Crouchman had been detained in connection with a major armed robbery and was in police custody pending charges. It was unclear last night how long he had been in custody, but information reaching this newspaper last night was that Crouchman is to appear in court today.

According to hospital sources, Crouchman claimed that he had been beaten severely about the body and his head to confess to the robbery. He alleged that police officers covered his head with a black plastic bag and inflicted the wounds while pressing him for a confession. Crouchman also claimed that he was knocked unconscious during the beating.

He was rushed to the hospital nursing serious injuries last night and was later admitted to the ward under police guard. It was shortly before 9 pm that a group of heavily armed policemen escorted Crouchman to the ward. He lay wincing in pain as they wheeled him to the ward.
Stabroek News was unable to solicit a comment from any police official last night on the incident.
