Fifty more persons who had undergone eye screening last week departed from Guyana on Tuesday last for Cuba for different types of eye surgery under the “Mission Miracle” programme.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release on Tuesday, the programme’s re-introduction will run until the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre becomes operable.
The $140M centre will include a surgical unit which will cater for laser surgeries. Some services provided by the centre are eye screening, corrective refractive error, cataract, retinopathy, glaucoma and retina detachment.
Patients who are eligible to travel to Cuba for treatment include those diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma and diabetic retinitis and those for follow-up treatment.
Since the programme was initiated it has been beneficial to thousands of Guyanese who have received surgery and treatment for eye ailments, especially cataract.
