Trio deny demanding money by menace charge

Three men who allegedly demanded a sum of money by menace from a man who was said to be stealing electricity were each granted bail in the sum of $85,000 when they appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The three East Coast Demerara residents, Oral Tyrell, 29, of 5 Paradise Housing Scheme; Michael Halley, 22, 3940 Republic Drive, Beterverwagting; and Michael Lall, 28, of Atlantic Gardens, were charged jointly with demanding money by menace with intent to steal the same.

The trio pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that on August 13 in Georgetown the men demanded the sum of $400,000 from Terry Anderson, in order that the same man would avoid prosecution for the larceny of electricity, with intent to steal the stated sum of money.
The charge was originally indictable but the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied and the charge was read to the men so that they could enter their pleas.
Magistrate Robertson granted bail in the sum of $85,000 each.
The matter was transferred to Court Three for January 6.
