Religious broadcasters urged to be respectful

Religious broadcasters, who participated in a special workshop organised by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), were reminded of the need to be respectful, tolerant, professional and responsible during their broadcasts.

The workshop was held yesterday at the Umana Yana under the theme: ‘Encourage and Create Respect for Religious, Cultural and other forms of Diversity in a Plural Society.’   Several broadcasters from different religious groups in Guyana were in attendance.

During deliberations the need for broadcasters to be respectful and tolerant especially when speaking about other religious groups was emphasised. It was noted that several broadcasters have made disrespectful and ignorant statements about other religious groups and followers. In an attempt to counter this, it was also suggested that more inter-religious dialogues be held so as to better educate persons about other religions.

When it came to being respectful to other religions, the broadcaster’s choice of words was seen as an important issue. It was also recommended that all religious broadcasters sign an agreement to follow certain guidelines before they are allowed on air. If they break this agreement they should face certain sanctions.

Meanwhile the need for religious broadcasters to be properly trained was highlighted, with the consensus being that this would help these persons with their general delivery.

Chairman of the ERC Bishop Juan Edghill said that the findings of yesterday’s workshop will be compiled and submitted to the National Assembly early in the new year for further evaluation.

The Chairman also pointed out that the President’s offer to start an inter-religious television station was still open. According to the Chairman, the President has promised to give $20M towards the starting of this station if the various religious leaders could come together and work out a feasible schedule for its operation.

However, the chairman said that sadly this is yet to materialise- since all the relevant stakeholders have not thrown their weight behind this project.
