No bedding offered to detainees at lock-ups

No mattress or other bedding is provided to persons held overnight at the Brickdam or Alberttown Police Stations’ lock-ups, Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee revealed in Parliament yesterday.

He was at the time responding orally to a question posed by Member of Parliament, Deborah Backer. The minister said that he is not aware that that this was in contravention of any international conventions to which Guyana is a signatory.

Further questioned by Backer, who said that several persons who were locked up overnight at those stations and who had sworn to affidavits said that there were no functioning toilets there and they were forced to defecate on the floor, Rohee said that he was unaware of the affidavits but both lock-ups had functioning toilets.

Asked about lights in those lock-ups, the minister stated that the Brickdam lock-ups had these but there is none at the one at Alberttown.
