Judge files defamation lawsuit against farmer

Berbice Land Court Judge, Kumar Doraisami has filed a $50M lawsuit against rice farmer, Manzoor Ally-Khan whom he alleges defamed his character by filing private criminal charges of attempted murder against him.

Justice Doraisami filed the motion against Ally-Khan, a rice farmer of Cotton Tree, West Berbice after Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid-Edmond dismissed the charge of attempted murder on the instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack.

The judge is also seeking an injunction to prevent Khan from picketing in front of the land court building and a restraining order for Khan to keep at a certain distance from him [Justice Doraisami].

The charge filed by Ally-Khan had read that on October 31 last at the land court annex entrance Justice Doraisami drove his motorcar into his path.

Ally-Khan and a resident of Rosignol were protesting against the judge at the time and Ally-Khan said that he had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the car.

Justice Doraisami was summoned to appear before Magistrate Persid-Edmond for the charge to be read to him but instead learnt that the matter was quashed.

The judge had told this newspaper that Ally-Khan had not made a report of attempted murder to the police station before filing the charges. Ally-Khan has indicated that he intended to pursue the matter.
