Stabroek Rotary joins drive to enhance National Park

The Rotary Club of Stabroek is collaborating with the National Parks Commission (NPC) to “enhance the appeal and usefulness of the National Park” at Thomas Lands.

According to a press release this venture aims to promote health and wellness among all citizens in keeping with national and regional efforts to promote an increase in physical activity. The Club said a regional summit on chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in September 2007 found that its prevalence incurred a significant economic burden and a debilitating effect on human resources. The ensuing Declaration of Port-of-Spain trumpeted the call for increased participation in sport and physical activity and supported the creation of suitable environments to reinforce this behaviour.

In the light of this, the Club felt impelled to lend its assistance in promoting the Park as a model, urban park for open air fitness activities. The works will be implemented in phases, the release said, adding that plans include planting trees and shrubbery, building picnic benches and tables, benabs, a kiddie play area and installing additional garbage receptacles. Other plans include erecting a volleyball court with stands and reintroducing pony rides at the children’s area.

Persons interested in supporting this initiative can contact rotarians Lenny Shuffler, John Campbell and Anand Harrilall on telephone numbers 649-1342/649-9112, 616-8236 and 629-1377 respectively or the NPC on telephone number 225-8016.
