Bus stops have been demarcated along two main thoroughfares to help bring order to the flow of traffic in keeping with a new plan for Georgetown.
According to a police press release, bus stops have been placed along Regent Street between Vlissengen Road and Avenue of the Republic and along both carriageways of Main Street between Church and Lamaha streets.
This action was taken after visits and assessments done by a team comprising Minister of Transport Robeson Benn, Technical Engineer attached to the ministry Kadri Parris, Chairman of the Private Sector Commission Gerry Gouveia, Traffic Superintendent Neil Semple, City Engineer Lloyd Alleyne and Adviser to the Guyana Minibus Association Hilbert Archer.
The release said the bus stops can be recognized by road markings which read, “Bus Stop Only” and the public is advised to use these stops to access public transportation. Motorists are also asked to desist from parking on the designated bus stop. According to the release bus stops will soon be designated along Aubrey Barker Road, Mandela Avenue, Sheriff and other streets.
Additionally, the police advised the large number of itinerant vendors (persons walking and selling various items) who do not have the legally required hucksters licence, to “put themselves in order” as police will soon be taking measures to enforce this law.
