A father of four who allegedly stole $1M and was caught redhanded was granted bail last week when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Thirty-seven-year-old Trevor Alfred of 16 Diamond, New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that on December 22, Alfred stole $1M from Manni Samaroo.
However, Alfred’s lawyer Adrian Thompson applied for bail for him stating that Alfred does not pose a flight risk.
Prosecutor Denise Griffith made no objections to the bail application and stated that the money was recovered. She then noted that Alfred was caught stealing the money from Samaroo’s car. She said that from information gathered, Samaroo locked Alfred in the car as he realised what Alfred was doing and later handed him over to the police.
Meanwhile, Samaroo, who was also present in court, stated that on the day in question he was in Bourda Market buying groceries with his wife and five workers. He said that he left his car with the money and upon returning to it he observed Alfred in it holding two bags and stuffing some of the money into his pants pockets. He said that as Alfred was then getting out of the car he ran to him and braced the car door so as to prevent him from escaping. Samaroo noted that Alfred then chucked him out of the way and had attempted to flee the area but two policemen who were in the vicinity at that time chased after him and caught him. The money was then recovered and Alfred was later charged.
Thompson then stated that the charge that was brought against his client was not an appropriate one for the matter.
The magistrate subsequently granted Alfred bail in the sum of $150,000 and transferred the case to Court Three for February 2.
