Teacher granted $60,000 bail over indecent assault of student

The 32-year-old teacher who was remanded to prison after facing an indecent assault charge last Friday was placed on $60,000 bail yesterday when he appeared for the second time at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Gopaul Ramathulla of 165 Middle Road, La Penitence who allegedly assaulted a teenaged female student from the school where he taught has been suspended from duty until further notice.

Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes told the court that reports made by the media about his client’s previous court appearance have only damaged Ramathulla’s reputation.

The lawyer further said that he will produce a representative from the President’s Youth Awards team, of which Ramathulla was a member, to attest to the fact that the accused is a man of good character.

Hughes requested that the court grant Ramathulla bail in a reasonable sum, stating that his client is not a flight risk.

The prosecution objected to bail indicating to the court that similar reports made to the Head Teacher of the school about Ramathulla are currently being investigated.

The prosecution further said that if granted bail the accused may interfere with the witness, therefore bail should not be granted until the end of the trial.

Ramathulla will have no contact with the virtual complainant, Hughes said, since his client has been suspended from duty and will not be at the school.

After listening to both parties, Magistrate Oneidge Allicock granted Ramathulla $60,000 bail. The matter will continue on July 8 in Court Six.
