Carpenter remanded over indecent assault of child

A 40-year-old carpenter was on Monday denied bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared in court on a charge of indecently assaulting a three-year-old girl.

Andrew Higgins of Lot 4 West La Penitence pleaded not guilty to indecent assault of a female on February 13 in Georgetown.

Representing Higgins, attorney-at-law Peter Hughes in his bail application told the court that while his client was not married he was the father of one and had no previous convictions.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Telford objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence and he indicated that the child was still in the hospital. Further, he stated that if granted bail it is believed that the defendant would flee the jurisdiction.

Magistrate Robertson remanded Higgins and he is to return to court on February 26.
