Bartica man on malicious wounding charge

A 39-year-old man was placed on $75,000 bail when he appeared yesterday before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding.

It is alleged that on June 16 at Bartica, Lawrence Wills of lot ‘S’ First Avenue, Bartica unlawfully and maliciously wounded Richard Abrams.

Wills’ lawyer Peter Hugh told the court that the VC is known to Wills and Abrams was wounded in an altercation with the accused who he attacked first.

He said that Abrams was the aggressor in this case. Hugh said that on the day in question Wills was asked by another man to buy two Guinness for him. When he was about to leave the shop the VC confronted him and started to verbally abuse him. When Wills asked him why he was ‘cursing’ him he pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the upper right arm.

Police prosecutor Denise Griffith said that the VC was indeed injured after he accosted the accused and had to undergo surgery for injuries he sustained to his abdomen.
The matter continues on July 9.
