The drivers of the two cars involved in last Saturday night’s smash-up at the Enmore junction, East Coast Demerara that claimed the life of a 31-year-old woman, were yesterday slapped with charges of causing death by dangerous driving and released on $350, 000 bail each.
Patrick Layne, the driver of the car, the deceased, Sunita Thomas was in and Faraz Mohamed appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Cove & John Magistrate Court yesterday. They were not required to plead when the charge was read to them and after brief submissions by their lawyers they were placed on bail and told to return to the court on January 28.
It is alleged that the two on December 13, drove their vehicles in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the death of Thomas, a resident of Dazzell Housing Scheme.
Police had said in a statement that the incident occurred around 10:40pm and investigations revealed that motor car PLL 1485 driven by Mohamed of Enmore and motor vehicle PKK 8288 driven by Layne of Paradise, East Coast Demerara were travelling in opposite directions along the roadway.
Layne turned across the road to enter an access road and the collision occurred. Both drivers were taken into custody to assist with investigations, the police had said.
Thomas, her 30-year-old sister Samantha Clarke also of Dazzell Housing Scheme Paradise and two relatives from Brooklyn, New York, Elorne and Patrick Layne along with a family friend Culley had gone out for some fresh air.
Clarke, Elorne Layne and Culley were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at approximately 11.36pm. Thomas was rushed there via a Mahaica ambulance and was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 12.31 am.
Layne and Mohammed also had to seek medical attention for minor injuries.
