L’Adventure wins Al Sport mixed circle tennis competition

L’Adventure Secondary School captured the Al Sport and Tour/Region Three tennis sub-association mixed team circle tennis competition when they defeated Uitvlugt Secondary School in the final played last Friday.

Uitvlugt batting first rattled up 164-6 from their 50 deliveries with Jeffrey Pereira hitting 66 and Rawle Pile 35.

In their turn at the wicket, L’Adventure reached 170-4 from 45 deliveries. Leading the way with the racket was the competition’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Colin Peters who struck 81 and the next best score, 17, came from Jarrel Carrington.

In the semi-final, Uitvlugt got past Leonora Secondary with ease to advance to the final where they were victorious. Batting first, Leonora reached 109-8 from their 50 deliveries with Hakin Alkins (16) and Tawana Patricks (14) being the principal scorers. In reply, Uitvlugt reached 110-2 from just 22 deliveries. Kester Small (53), Rayshan Cooke (20) and Rawle Pile 19 led the way for the victors.

More than 11 schools including Parika/Salem High, Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary, West Demerara Secondary, Wales High, Patentia Secondary and La Grange Post Primary participated in the competition, which began in December last year with matches played at the Hugh Anderson Sports Complex, Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.

Although they did not reach far in the competition, Stewartville Secondary school was adjudged the Best Dressed team in the competition and received a trophy for that achievement while the schools received circle tennis wickets as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and sport (MCYS) looks to revitalize the game in the schools.

The teams were met by MCYS officer Hazel Wilson who also looped the first ball to start the finals organized by Sports Officer attached to the MCYS, Alistair Munroe.
