Allen to campaign in US, possible

National middleweight boxer Lennox Alleyne will soon be campaigning in the United States of America (USA) under a contractual deal that was organized by popular boxing enthusiast in the USA, Cameron Dunkin.

At a simple press briefing held at the Upscale Restaurant on Hincks Street, manager of the 22 year old Alleyne, Carwyn Holland, told the media that his charge will be campaigning for the next nine months in the USA where he will also be the sparring partner for Bernard Hopkins who will be opposing Joe Calzaghe on 19th April. Holland also disclosed that an International card is slated for Guyana later this year, when Alleyne is expected to feature on the under card of that promotion engaging his opponent who is not yet known to have fought over six rounds.

He will be in action on the 22nd March in another six rounder when he opposes Jesse Orta. Whilst in the USA, Alleyne will be contracted to the Winky Promotions Group that is owned by Winky Wright, a group that also has ties to Golden Boy Promotions which is managed by the ‘Golden Boy’ himself, Oscar De La Hoya.

Alleyne expressed his delight at this opportunity and also stated how happy he was to be associated with Holland, managing director of Carwyn Holland Promotions.

“I must say that I was surprised and excited at the same time when Carwyn called me and gave me the news. He does his work for his boxers and this step will help enhance my experience as I will be amongst some of the best fighters in the world. Right now, with me fighting on a Bernard Hopkins or Oscar De La Hoya card is a tremendous boost for me and speaks a lot of my achievements so far in boxing.”

Alleyne who will be handled by Kelly Pavnick during his sojourn in the USA is expected to return home in November when boxing fans will have a chance to see him showcase his skills against Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis should Odinga Lumumba the manager of Lewis take the fight.

“We want to take on ‘Six Head’ to build up the resume of Alleyne. We know that he can defeat Lewis anytime and any day. This move will certainly boost up Lennox’s confidence and within the next two years, he will be contending for a world title as he has the potential to win one,” Holland stated.

“With all that is going on in Guyana at the moment, sports have been able to lift the image of the country in some form. Our twenty20 team did travel to Antigua and performed creditably well although they did not retain the title. Then there is young Andrew Murray Jnr who has been selected to participate in the Sutherland training camp in England for two weeks courtesy of Digicel. Lennox’s achievement would only continue to highlight this country for their sporting achievements to date, giving Guyana some positive mileage,” Holland stated.

Holland continued: “We are looking at having an international boxing card staged here in Guyana that will be televised live by Home Box Office (HBO) where Lennox will be fighting on the undercard and another Guyanese whose name I would not disclose at this moment being in action in the main bout fighting for a world title. I am appealing to the Ministry of Sports, and the relevant authorities including the president for their support in making this venture a reality.”

Alleyne is expected to depart these shores on 19th March.
