GCC through to nation-wide Twenty20 semi-finals

The Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pulled off a victory against the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in a breath-taking Georgetown zone final of the inaugural Noble House Invitational Twenty20 knockout cricket tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground yesterday.

(Aubrey Crawford photo)Batting first, GCC were indebted to man-of-the-match Leon Johnson’s 74 which helped them to 157-5 from their 15 overs to which DCC reached 146-8 with Jamal Hinckson getting 60.
The win was worth $50,000 to GCC and a place in the national semi-finals which will take place at the same venue today.

They will join hosts Malteenoes, Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar and national twenty20 champions Young Warriors in the battle for the $200,000 first prize.
In yesterday’s zone final which wasreduced to 15-overs-a-side, because of the lkate completition of the GCC/Police Sports Club match, GCC took first strike and were indebted to Johnson, who slammed six fours and four sixes, Wasim Haslim,32 and Ricardo Jadunath, 26.

In reply, DCC despite Hinckson’s valiant knock which included five fours and one six, fell short by11 runs.

Johnson received $10,000 while the DCC team received $25,000.

In the semi-finals, DCC got past Police Sports Club (PSC) while Transport Sports Club (TSC) bowed out to GCC.
