(Lawrence Fanfair photo)The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) in partnership with the National Sports Commission (NSC) has embarked on a community outreach sports development programme targeting youths of some communities.

The aim of the programme is to get the youths involved in sports to some extent football and to this effect, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport along with four other entities were yesterday the recipients of footballs courtesy of Food for the Poor (FFTP) a non-profit organization yesterday.

At a short and brief presentation ceremony held in the board room of FFP, Public Relations Manager Michelle Brancker distributed over 172 footballs valued at around $150,000.00 to not only the MCYS who received 50 balls, but also the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) who also received 50 and the sports departments of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Guyana Prisons Service who each received 24 balls respectively.

Prior to the presentation of the balls, Director of Sports, Neil Kumar told the gathering that the gesture by FFTP would go a long way in helping the MCYS and NSC in their community outreach sports development programmes.
“We at the NSC have embarked on a community development as we are not satisfied with the development of our youths in the field of sports within the communities.

“We are also looking at the possibility of developing women’s football which is in a dire state at the moment and needs uplifting.

“We are also toying with the idea of having women’s football played at the Inter Guiana Games level, thus this gesture by FFP is a timely one to the MCYS and NSC,” Kumar said adding, “I must say thanks to FFP for this donation and I want to assure them that this will go a long way with the development of football in Guyana.”
