Namilco Football Festival…

The Buxton Stars delivered a stunner on Friday evening at the Tucville playfield when they defeated the defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in Fruta Conquerors-organized Namilco Football Festival Knockout Tournament.

Buxton Stars delivered a one-nil blow to knockout the defending champions in the curtain raiser of the triple-header which included GFC de-feathering Flamingo 4 – 0 and Fruta Conquerors conquering Rosignol United 3 – 2.

Before the second half goal which crumbled GDF, the teams battled to a goalless first half, then when play resumed after a few touches Buxton Stars commanded the ball and flew down the right flank where it was crossed to Ruben Morrison who scored in the 46th minute.

Morrison had a bit of a tangle with the diving GDF goal keeper but he still managed to get it over him and into the back of the net. GFC had a bit of a field day with the inexperienced Flamingo team that opposed them for the 90 minutes of play they completely commanded.

Rodwell Willington (GFC) wasted no time in getting the game moving and  he claimed a double in 12 minutes, finding his first goal in the 3rd minute firing on the 18-yard box after he was fed a lovely ball by teammate Peter Parks.

He then acquired his second goal in the 12th minute by way of penalty, given after being fouled in the 18-yard box while attempting a shot for goal. The penalty was blasted into the top right of the goal even though the keeper got fingertips to it.
Parks and Gavin Whyte then joined Willington on the list of scorers when they found the back of the net in the 39th and 58th minutes respectively.

Rosignol United, though an inexperienced team, gave the Fruta Conquerors a run for their money in their encounter. Their greenness was exposed throughout the match when they missed out on numerous opportunities at the goal mouth and did not execute fundamental plays.

National Junior striker Manasseh Primo and Jomo Hinds accounted for the FC’s goals.  Primo recorded a double in the 50th and 63rd minute while Hinds drew first blood in the 35th minute.

The Berbician team did answer but they were just short of the mark while  the exuberant Shawn Brutus was able to record a double to help his team keep their heads  high as they exited the tournament defeated.
