Man charged over pedal cyclist’s death

At the Fort Wellington Court yesterday, Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop granted pre-trial liberty in the sum of $150,000 to the driver who reportedly caused the death of a 15-year-old pedal cyclist.

The court heard that on January 5, 2009 at Number 10 Village, West Berbice, Neil Redder of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam drove motorcar PKK 4409 in a dangerous manner and caused the death of Danley Braithwaite.

Reports are that Braithwaite who resided in the Pomeroon was holidaying with his sister when he rode out of a yard and swerved suddenly into the path of the car that was proceeding along the roadway.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Hatty Anthony asked that bail be refused on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the offence.

In response, attorney-at-law Joel Persid Edmond argued that the offence is bailable. He asked that reasonable bail be considered to ensure his client’s attendance at court.

The lawyer further submitted that “no one deliberately sets out to take the life of others in an accident” and that his client is deeply sorry that Braithwaite lost his life.

He told the court that Redder, a former Senior Superintendant of Prisons in NA who worked there for 25 year is engaged in poultry farming.
He said his client is married and has three children.
Redder is scheduled to return to court on January 14.
