The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Thursday discovered three kilos of cocaine among soya chunks destined for Canada at the post office and are looking for a man identified as Anand Singh.
The package was taken to the post office and a fake ID card bearing Singh’s image was used for the purpose of completing the paperwork. In the light of repeated shipments of drugs through the Guyana Post Office Corporation regulations had been stiffened to require photo identification plus a utility bill as proof of address.
Sources say this shipment again pointed out weaknesses in this arrangement as a fake ID number was utilized and an old utility bill was presented. Sources say the tightened measures required that only current utility bills be presented.
The cocaine was cut into sizes similar to the chunks and camouflaged to look like real soya chunks.
The cocaine was hidden among packets of real soya chunks and condiments. The information gleaned by CANU is being used for further investigations.
