Caring for whom?

Dear Editor,
After a long period of almost no road repairs in Lethem, there has been a flurry of activity in the past two weeks. Piles of gravel that lay dangerously at the sides of roads for months were suddenly levelled away and potholes that frustrated residents for well over a year are now being filled. Late last year, long after a dengue outbreak in Lethem, there was a token fogging exercise. Yet today, for only the third time in about two years, the fogging machine has been seen in operation.

These are sure signs that a senior government dignitary is due to visit Lethem soon. We can therefore expect as well that the parapets will be weeded, garbage cleared, and electricity and water supply improved.
Why must the country’s resources be used so often for the brief benefit of government officials, while the people are made to suffer for such lengthy periods? As representatives of government, the regional authorities are complicit in this deliberate policy, and cannot be excused.

Over the years this government has promoted itself as a caring one. However it is proving yet again that it cares for itself first.
Yours faithfully,
Clairmont Lye
