An Industry, East Coast Demerara spray painter is now contemplating his next move, after two motor cars he was hired to spray sustained significant damage as a result of a fire yesterday afternoon.
Stabroek News last evening visited the scene of the fire at Lot 2, Industry Crown Dam. The fire started around 3 pm and lasted for about 40 minutes, an eyewitness recounted. According to the owner of the property, he was in the process of spraying a car in his yard when sparks caught onto the power line which is connected to his house. The cars were at the time parked in an empty lot located in front of the man’s house. The man, who gave his name as Singh, said that he then noticed a small fire where the electricity line is connected to his home.
The man’s brother-in-law told this newspaper that as the fire started at the house, the power line burst from the house and fell on two cars in the yard, including the car which was being welded. Quick action by the family and neighbours saved the house from any significant damage. While the front section of the house sustained mild damage, the two cars were significantly damaged. The spray painter said that the interior of the two cars, a Toyota Sprinter and a Toyota Carina, sustained extensive damage. The man’s brother-in-law said that the Guyana Fire Service was called soon after the fire started but by the time they arrived, the fire had already subsided. He could not give an estimate of the cost of the damages but he noted that the Toyota Carina might be completely written off.
Employees of the Guyana Power and Light were in the process of reconnecting the power line to the house when this newspaper was at the scene last evening.
