City clears Alexander St encumbrances

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) yesterday cleared a section of land at the corner of Alexander and Regent streets where persons have been selling articles such as stove burners, toilet bowls, tire rims, pipe fittings and tools among other used items over the years.

According to a nearby vendor, the M&CC had issued several warnings to the individuals who have been selling at that location on a number of occasions urging them to keep the area clean. She said yesterday morning members of the City Council arrived at the location along with two trucks and a front end loader and began clearing the area, much to the displeasure of the vendors.

According to the vendor, she was informed by persons on the scene that the articles were taken to the Mandela Avenue landfill site.

A few persons who were milling around the area yesterday, told this newspaper  that ‘stolen’ items have traditionally been traded at that spot. They said that vagrants would steal items such as car mirrors  and make a ‘quick sale’ at that location.
