Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson last week sentenced a 38-year-old man to two years imprisonment after he admitted chopping his uncle with a cutlass.
Barry David Joe, 38, of 66 Broad Street, Charlestown pleaded guilty to the charge of felonious wounding when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
According to the facts of the case on April 13, at his home, Barry unlawfully and maliciously wounded his uncle Elroy Joe, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause him actual bodily harm.
Elroy Joe who wore a cast on his left hand, told the court that on the said day he had gone to visit his sister, Barry’s mother, when he observed Barry watching the television. He said some time after his sister turned off the television set and Barry became annoyed, demanded she turn it back on and when she refused he dealt her several blows about her body.
Elroy Joe said when he intervened and voiced his displeasure Barry became more annoyed, ran out of the house, returned with a cutlass and chopped him on his hand. He then fled. Barry was later arrested and charged.
In his defence, Barry told the court, “I do duh cause I getting problems in meh house.” He said that he had been deeply stressed by his family. He also admitted that his uncle’s account of the incident was true.
