Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen says that he is highly disappointed about not facing Howard Eastman on Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when the two were suppose to clash for the vacant Super Middle weight title of Guyana.
Reports are that Eastman, who is Guyana’s Middleweight champion, on his way from Berbice to face Allen on Saturday, was held by the police at a roadblock in Weldaad Village around 2.30 pm and detained for investigations.
Allen, 24, yesterday said that he feels his months of preparation for the bout have been wasted and he feels it has all gone down the drain.
“I feel very disappointed that I didn’t get to fight Eastman because I have been preparing for about two months now and I have put a lot of effort into it as well. It’s just time wasting” said the young fighter who was speaking with some amount of anger in his voice.
Boxing pundits were all saying that the young fighter, whose record stands at nine fights without a loss and five by way of knockout, does not have the stamina to go the distance like Eastman and for that reason Allen says that he was sad he did not get to answer those questions in the ring.
“You know, some people are saying that because I have never went to 12 rounds that Eastman would have taken the fight. They are saying that, `oh after the first six rounds, Eastman would have had me on the ropes’ and for me not being able to show them that this was not going to happen, makes me even more annoyed that I didn’t get to fight him”.
“I really wanted to show them that this is not the Lennox that they all knew, I know that I would have won the fight, no doubt, and I think I wanted my fans to see me fight because it’s been a long time since they saw me”, the fighter declared.
He said that he had only learnt that he was not going to face Eastman when he arrived at the venue on Saturday evening and was preparing for the fight.
Leon Gilkes, he was told, was going to be Eastman’s replacement.
“The promoters tried to get Gilkes to fight me, so the people can see me fight, and he accepted, then, he just suddenly said that he’s not going to fight me no more and went home.”
The 24-year-old fighter says he will seek a meeting today with the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) to try and see what will be their next step as it relates to him fighting in Guyana and more so to salvage some pride and have him fight as soon as possible.
In the meantime, Allen plans to spend some quality time with his family since he will be around for a while and he will stay fit and keep training, calling for anyone who thinks they can beat him.
Stabroek Sports made contact yesterday with the president of the GBBC Peter Abdool who told this newspaper that he was unable to give a comment at that time as he was in a meeting.
