Under cards punch above weight at ‘The Big Showdown’

Despite not having ‘The Big Showdown’ between Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen and Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, the under cards did spark some fire on a cold and disappointing night for boxing fans.

Shondell Alfred turned in a world class performance to beat a determined Stephaney George to retain her national Bantamweight title in the process.

Despite tasting the canvas three times in their eight-round encounter, Stephaney George forced Guyana’s stubborn Bantamweight champion to the limit.

Alfred floored George in the opening round and twice in the second, but George showed grit and determination to force the judges to deliver a unanimous decision. The three judges scored the fight 80-59, 79-71 and 80-67, all in favour of Alfred. Meanwhile George said that she is seeking a rematch, since she feels the results were not fair.

Another exciting fight was that between the two debutants, Debbie ‘The Tiger’ Tyson and Avlon Scotland of Linden.  Even though it was short-lived since Tyson knocked out Scotland in the first round, the few minutes of the bout showing Tyson unleashing a barrage of punches and marking her presence on the local boxing circuit.

Dexter Marques did exactly what he said he was going to do to Paul Lewis which was beat him into submission. The blows were so much for Lewis that when the bell was sounded for the two fighters to come out for the beginning of the fourth round, Lewis was a no show and as such, the fight was awarded to Marques by way of TKO.

Kwesi Jones earned a first round TKO win over another debutant, Randy Tello, when the judges were forced to call a halt to the fight, one minute, 55 seconds in round one, since Tello was not able to take any more punches which came in a hurry from Jones.

Meanwhile, Shondell Parks gained a unanimous decision victory over Shelly Gibson in their female heavyweight clash which was fought over four rounds.
