Digicel team, Lions to combat anaemia

Digicel and the Lions Club of D’Urban Park have launched an anaemia project in order to curb the prevalence of the condition in the society.

The project was launched on Friday at the North Ruimveldt Secondary School where health personnel and nutritionists informed students about the condition and the risks associated with it, a press release from Digicel said.

A large percentage of the population, particularly women and children are afflicted with the disorder and the collaboration aims at raising awareness. Dr Dalgleish Joseph said “Anaemia cases are prevalent in Guyana because persons are not aware of the condition and very often persons do not eat an iron rich balanced diet.”

Digicel Guyana Sales Director Kalpesh Joshi said the company is pleased with the collaboration as “it is part of the company’s goal to work closely with organisations that cater to health issues that affect our society.”

The team will be hosting a series of sessions with secondary school students and women at health centres countrywide.

President of the Club Denise Thompson said in addition to raising awareness the Anaemia Project will also be conducting tests and providing iron supplements for persons diagnosed with the condition.
