Dear Editor,
The time has come for the coaching fraternity to take its rightful place in the process of development of football in Guyana. If the standard of football is to rise to a consistently competitive, regional level, it is imperative that coaches play a lead role by producing technically, tactically, physically and mentally strong, well-balanced and prepared players.
There are many limitations facing coaches at present but the first and biggest obstacle to our effectiveness is ourselves. There is a sufficient number of experienced, trained, knowledgeable and licensed coaches to produce players with the desirable characteristics and attitude to be “professionals.”
For our contribution, which forms the basis for any developmental or expansive programmes, to be effective we must become organised and structured. The demands of the modern game make it necessary for us “coaches” to organize ourselves so that we can be adequately and appropriately educated and trained.
Let’s give the executive leadership, the corporate sector, the sports ministry, fans and the nation the necessary impetus needed to be proud of our footballing expeditions, by doing our job in an organised, structured and professional manner.
In an effort to kick-start the process, I am suggesting that all interested coaches meet at an agreed time and place, to view and discuss modern trends in football; have a demonstration of conducting a tactical session; or just share information about fitness, nutrition, and or methods/styles of coaching.
I am almost positive that such an initiative would be supported by the Guyana Football Association (GFA). Any takers?
