Foundation for new Kingston power plant 70% complete

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) CEO Bharat Dindyal says the foundation for the new Kingston power plant is now 70% complete as work moves apace to start operations by the third quarter of the year.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the plant is among the major interventions in the electricity sector this year and commercial operations are expected to start by the third quarter of the year. The plant will comprise three of the latest Wartsila engines, for which the foundation has already been laid. The engines are expected to arrive in three weeks.

GINA said about 95% of the new plant’s operations will make use of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). The 60 hertz plant will be interconnected to the 69 Kilovolt (KV) substation at Sophia using transmission lines that will run via the Lamaha railway embankment.
