Security will not be compromised at prisons – Rohee

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee said government is committed to treating prisoners humanely but not at the expense of security.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) said Rohee made this statement on Saturday at the end of a tour of the Mazaruni Prison.

Prisoners raised several issue in an interactive session with the minister, including a request to participate in remedial classes so that they can become productive citizens on their release.

Meanwhile, the prison’s administration said the population exceeds 200 and this affects its management. The administration also pointed out that because of its remote location it was difficult to attract academic staff to conduct remedial training at the Mazaruni prison. The management also discussed other problems challenging the facility. Rohee urged them to be vigilant to ensure that the prisoners cannot escape.
