The strengthening of the country’s economy and the continuous development of its human capital is seen as vital to consolidating and developing the freedom the country attained on May 26, 1966, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) said in its independence anniversary message.
According to the PPP it is a hostile international environment that the government has to navigate very carefully in the period of globalisation.
The party said that Guyanese can justly be proud of the many achievements that have been made, particularly since “the return of democracy in October of 1992”.
“The PPP has always believed that social and economic progress will flourish when political democracy exists in land. That position has been verified by our experiences in this country,” the release said.
It said that today Guyanese enjoy great freedoms and human rights are fully respected in Guyana and it is an atmosphere that has allowed progress to visit every aspect of their lives, not only materially but culturally as well.
The party described independence for Guyana as the culmination of the struggles for freedom that was started with the advent of colonialism.
“Our peoples from the native Amerindian, the African slaves and the Indian indentured labourers fought against the oppression imposed by the Dutch and British colonial powers,” the party said. The party reminded that it had the elimination of colonial rule was its number one objective at the time of its formation in 1950 and it never deviated from that course.
